Seek and Destroy METALLICA frontman James Hetfield says in the latest issue of So What!, the official METALLICA fan club magazine, that he considers himself a "reborn straight-edge." The straight-edge lifestyle means that one does not drink or take drugs, which some also avoiding meat caffeine or prescription drugs. Hetfield says in the interview, "Obviously I'm not straight-edge — a true, hardcore straight-edge has never had any of it in her or her whole life. But I'm a reborn straight-edge." The interviewer questioned Hetfield when he noticed a straight-edge tattoo on the singer/guitarist's hand. Hetfield got sober in 2001 after years of taking drugs and drinking, nearly causing METALLICA to break up and delaying the recording of what became the "St. Anger" album. According to The Pulse of Radio, a while back, Hetfield recalled the moment when he made the decision to get help for his problems with drugs and alcohol. "My wife threw me out of the house and I went to rehearsal, and she could not believe that I had done that, and said, 'You've got to check yourself in somewhere,' and I said, 'Nah, no way, I'm the singer for METALLICA, I can't get help. I don't need help,'" he said. "A lot of denial. She was very adamant about me seeking the help and I went in, I think, for her and for my family." METALLICA begins its next round of European tour dates on June 14 in Spain. One of the shows on the trek, a June 22 "Big Four" gig in Bulgaria with SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX, will be beamed to movie theaters around the world. The group played in Tel Aviv, Israel last Saturday (May 22) for the first time in a decade. |
